Synthetic Cannabinoids, also known as “synthetic marijuana” are manmade chemicals that are both mind altering and falsely marketed as safe and legal alternatives to marijuana. According to the National Institutes of Health, although they act on the same brain cell receptors as THC (the ingredient in marijuana), some of them bind more strongly and produce stronger effects. The health effects can range from altered perception and symptoms of psychosis to extreme anxiety, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts. As a result, authorities have made it illegal to sell, buy, or possess some of these chemicals.
